The month of March brought more good news for Byrnes High School teacher, Emily Cathcart! The English teacher, and Rebel alumni, was named as a Top 5 Finalist for SC Induction Teacher of the Year. The annual award is presented by the SC Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (SC ASCD). Cathcart was recognized, along with other finalists, at the association's spring conference earlier this month.
Cathcart was awarded Spartanburg District Five "Induction Teacher of the Year" last spring, following her very first year in the classroom. The proud Byrnes graduate is now in her 2nd year teaching at her alma mater, and strives every day to show students she cares as a teacher. While taking attendance each day, Cathcart walks around and makes a point to personally interact with each student and ask how they're doing. "Making this a part of my daily routine has set the tone that I care about my students as people before I care about the content," she says.
