Nathan Jones and Beatriz Lopes

It's not every day you get the kind of exciting news that Nathan Jones and Beatriz Lopes received this week!  The Byrnes High School seniors found out they have been selected as semi-finalists for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship program.  Byrnes Principal Erin Greenway delivered the news, along with congratulatory letters from the National Merit organization, on Tuesday.  "We are so proud of Nathan and Beatriz," says Greenway.  "This is an incredible honor that only a small percentage of high school students in our area, state, and country  receive each year.  This serves as a testament to Nathan and Beatriz's commitment to the classroom, and their focus on their future."

Approximately 16,000 students, representing less than 1% of high school seniors, from across the country are selected as semi-finalists by the National Merit Scholarship program.  Students are selected  based on outstanding performance on the PSAT during their junior year of high school.

Nathan and Beatriz will both advance to the next level of competition, and finalists will be announced in February.

Annually, the National Merit program awards more than $28 million in college scholarships to students across the nation.

Congratulations to Nathan Jones and Beatriz Lopes!
